Alison began working at James Cropper straight after university as a Colour Technician. She trained on the job with time in the laboratory and on machines as well as undertaking courses in papermaking and colour. She then became a Technical Specialist in Paper working on NPI projects and building relationships with customers and focusing on colour.

" There is a real culture of learning and development at James Cropper. Not only have I gained technical skills specific to paper and colour, but I have also discovered how to approach problems with a technical mindset and adapt my communication skills for different scenarios.” "

Tell us about your role at James Cropper

AR
I work in the laboratory, specialising in colour. In simple terms, this means matching colours for customers, making it in the lab and using machinery to scale. My customers include the likes of Burberry, Selfridges and Rolex and I also spend time visiting our brands, holding demonstrations and working with procurement teams to ensure the very best results.

What can we all do to encourage women to explore these careers?

AR
The world has changed in terms of flexibility, and it’s meant that I have been able to continue in a technical career whilst also raising a family. I am optimistic that this will continue to improve and we’ll see more and more women entering the industry and reaching senior levels. I’d advise anyone interested to ask as many questions as possible, be willing to learn and take up opportunities to train.

How do you balance work and life?

AR
I work part time which enables me to progress in my career whilst also raising my family. It’s important to me that my children see their mother working in a job she loves and I hope that it inspires them.

What are you most proud of?

AR
I am very proud to be present both at work and with my family.
