Veronika Nuretdinova
Veronika started her working life as a tax consultant before joining McKinsey as a Business Analyst. Led by her entrepreneurial spirit, she then launched a historical tour company in Moscow whilst also freelancing as a strategy consultant. A love of coding and a Master’s degree in Data Science from Berkeley led Veronika to adjust her career and in 2022, she joined James Cropper.

Tell us about your role at James Cropper
VN
I work across the whole James Cropper Group by automating tasks - helping my colleagues save time and freeing them up to concentrate on creative projects. It entails building software, modelling and data analysis and I’d say the essential skills include curiosity, persistence and good communication. Curiosity, as data science is a rapidly changing area; persistence, because for many problems you won’t find the solutions quickly and communication, to connect with people and bring them on the journey.

What attracted you to the role and what do you like about working at James Cropper?
VN
I enjoy my role for the freedom it provides within the organisation. I’m not restricted to routine tasks but rather can deep dive into any areas where I see the potential for impact. It gives me great satisfaction to take on challenges that make a real difference to a whole team’s working day, for example, improving scheduling and identifying gaps in training.

What can we all do to encourage women to explore these careers?
VN
I’d encourage young women to upskill where possible, for example, a course in coding can open so many doors. And real-world experience counts for so much. I am always open to having conversations with young women who’d like to know more about my line of work. Businesses can also help by embracing and encouraging a flexible work environment.

How do you balance work and life?
VN
I’ve always carved out time to enjoy my hobbies, in particular, music which gives me such joy. I’m currently learning to play the guitar which is the third instrument I play. When I’m practicing, I become immersed in the music and it takes me away from the working day.
I also focus on efficiency, rather than hours spent at a desk. My most productive hours are in the morning and the late evening and around this I fit in exercise to restore energy and refresh my mind.

What are you most proud of?
VN
I have moments everyday that remind me why I do what I do. It can be something significant, like introducing new software, but also little things like when someone tells me, “You’ve made my day”, after a conversation. Or when I see someone write a piece of code themselves after a training session I’ve given them.
