But before its transformation can begin, it has to be clear what the pulp will ultimately be moulded into. And what properties does it need to be suitable for that application? Does it need to be lightfast, resistant to bleed, strong, flexible, lightweight, or printable? What sort of sensory experience should it deliver – vibrant colours, smoothness, or a tactile roughness? And how will it be finished? Will it be embossed, debossed, foiled, varnished, or treated with a particular coating?

All of these questions need decisive answers, as they determine the exact route this beakerful of sludge will take on its journey to becoming a finished product. The final look and finish of the paper have to be delivered alongside the functional properties that its application demands. This means the development process demands much more than just mixing together pigments or dyes until the final colour matches the brief.

For example, a luxury paper bag for retail applications needs to be robust, water-resistant, and resistant to bleed and rubbing. For this application, pigments are preferred over dyes, as they attach to the surface of a fibre and do not bleed easily when wet, making them an ideal choice for a product that has to perform even when exposed to the elements. Dyes, while producing more vivid colours, are absorbed into the paper fibres, are more prone to fading and bleeding over time. Both solutions need to be combined and balanced with other treatments, such as brightening agents and coatings, to deliver a precise coloured sheet of paper that can scale into full production consistently.

Throughout this time, the nondescript grey pulp transforms in a constant process of iteration and evolution. It is taken out of the beaker, mixed with fillers and colourants, and pressed into sheets.
