#TheCupFund Winners 2019 Announced

Charity Hubbub that creates environmental campaigns with a difference recently announced the 12 #TheCupFund winners. James Cropper is proud to have been selected as the recycling partner on four of these projects.

Winners of the Cup Fund will receive investment to boost coffee cup recycling facilities across the UK. Funding has been provided from the 5p charge on disposable coffee cups that has been voluntarily introduced by Starbucks and donated to reduce plastic pollution.

The Winners:

  • Better Bankside BID
  • Camden Climate Change Alliance
  • Bywaters Waste and Recycling
  • Grosvenor Britain & Ireland
  • Brixton BID
  • AVS Vending
  • Bristol Waste Company
  • Forge Recycling
  • Westmorland Services (Cumbria & Gloucester)
  • British Land / Giltbrook Retail Park
  • University of Northampton
  • Oxford Direct Services

Grant funding of between £50,000 to £100,000 has been made available to each successful project. The fund is supported by Starbucks pioneering 5p cup charge which is applied when a customer chooses to use a single-use paper cup. Introduced voluntarily last year, Starbucks has donated all funds to Hubbub to support recycling and sustainability efforts.

An estimated seven million coffee cups from cities across the country including Bristol, York, Gloucester and London, will be headed to the Lake District as a result. The coffee cups, collected by the Bristol Waste Company, Forge Recycling, Westmorland Family and Better Bankside, Team London Bridge and Paper Round recycling schemes, will be given a second life using James Cropper’s CupCycling facility.

As a perfect example of circular design, the cups will be transformed into beautiful packaging, paper and an array of stationery – giving businesses the chance to go green when it comes to paper supplies.

“ WE ARE THRILLED TO HAVE BEEN SELECTED AS ONE OF THE PARTNERS FOR THE SOUTHBANK PROJECT

This is an innovative recycling scheme that will launch across one of London’s busiest boroughs and aims to recycle over two million used coffee cups in its first year. To date, we have recycled over 100 million coffee cups at our CupCycling™ facility in the last year alone. However, we have the capacity to recycle up to 500 million per year and being part of this initiative will enable us to transform more used cups into beautiful paper and packaging products. This is a huge step forward in the development of used coffee cup recycling in London, and we’re delighted to be part of it. ”

The investment in coffee cup recycling facilities will make it possible to recycle an extra 35 million cups per annum. The winning projects cover the heart of London, major cities, shopping centres, universities and motorway service stations. They were selected by an independent expert grant panel including representatives from LARAC and the CIWM.

The fund was developed in close collaboration with the recycling industry ensuring that all the collected cups will be recycled within the UK into a variety of new products including high quality stationery and cardboard boxes.
