Nestled in one of the beautiful valleys of the Lake District, Joanne Storey is directing research efforts in our paper mill's specialist laboratory, delving into the unique properties that various paper fibre sources provide in terms of functionality, aesthetic look and interaction with colour. Her team informs the business on delivering the high expectation and quality balance that prestige brands expect, particularly for packaging, with its high visibility that carries brand DNA, its story and its heritage.

Joanne is proud to be one of a growing movement of young scientists applying their skills and knowledge on material research to help drive sustainable change, and is passionate about encouraging future generations into the science and sustainability field.

As a chemist, she is passionate about using science to find responsible solutions for the wider community.

Her research includes finding the unique blend of sustainable fibre recycled paper and colour that enables James Cropper to create paper-based solutions that are both kind to the planet, but that are also beautiful. Merging desirability with ethics and eco-design brings new value to packaging for the luxury brands James Cropper partners with such as Burberry and Selfridges – with the potential to exceed the expectations of consumers with elegance and also transparency.

“ It’s about collaboration, understanding and securing supply chains, making good choices with materials, recycling and diminishing the use of single-use materials by developing solutions that are in themselves easy to recycle. ”
